Why a specialist
Why Does DeFi Need a Specialist Accountant?
Tax software handles exchange trades well, but DeFi breaks it. Smart contracts, LP tokens, wrapped assets, and cross-chain bridges produce transactions that software often mislabels or misses completely.
The UK has no separate DeFi tax regime. HMRC applies normal capital gains and income tax rules to each transaction, based on what actually happens to your tokens. That means someone has to read the contract, work out whether you gave up ownership, and decide whether you made a disposal or received income. Software can't make those judgement calls reliably.
Taxable events
What Counts as Taxable in DeFi?
Swapping one token for another is a disposal, even if no pounds ever touch your bank account. Depositing tokens into a liquidity pool in exchange for LP tokens is often a disposal too, and so is withdrawing from the pool later.
Lending can count as a disposal if you hand over ownership of your tokens to the protocol. Staking and lending rewards usually count as income at their sterling value on the day you receive them. Wrapping a token, such as turning ETH into WETH, may also count as a disposal depending on how the contract works.
HMRC sets out its views in its Cryptoassets Manual. The answer often depends on the specific protocol, which is why a transaction-by-transaction review matters.
What HMRC sees
HMRC Can See More Than You Think
From 1 January 2026, UK crypto platforms must collect and report user and transaction data to HMRC under the Cryptoasset Reporting Framework. The first reports reach HMRC by 31 May 2027. You can read the official guidance on GOV.UK.
DeFi protocols themselves may sit outside that net, but the exchanges you use to move money in and out do not. HMRC can see funds leaving an exchange for a private wallet and coming back later with a different value. If that gap doesn't match your return, you may receive an HMRC crypto nudge letter. Ignoring one can lead to a full HMRC crypto investigation.
What we do
What Does a DeFi Accountant UK Investors Hire Actually Do?
-
1. Map Every Wallet and Chain
The first step covers every wallet and exchange you have used, from MetaMask and Ledger to Coinbase and Kraken. It also traces your activity across networks like Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, and Solana. Block explorers such as Etherscan reveal both sides of each bridge transfer, so no token goes missing.
-
2. Decode Each Transaction
Every smart contract interaction needs a correct tax label. Uniswap and Curve pool deposits usually count as disposals, while Lido staking rewards usually count as income. Wrapped tokens, airdrops and gas fees each follow their own rules, and HMRC's Cryptoassets Manual guides every decision.
-
3. Calculate Your Tax Position
HMRC's same-day, 30-day and Section 104 matching rules decide your gains, with every transaction valued in pounds sterling. Income and capital gains stay separate, your £3,000 annual exempt amount applies, and missed losses from hacks or rug pulls reduce your bill.
-
4. File Your Return and Handle HMRC
Your Self Assessment, including the SA108 capital gains pages, goes to HMRC through an authorised agent. Older years get fixed through an amendment or a voluntary disclosure via HMRC's Digital Disclosure Service. Most engagements take two to four weeks on a fixed fee agreed upfront.
With a DeFi accountant UK tax rules become someone else's daily focus, so you get figures you can defend rather than a software guess.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a DeFi accountant cost in the UK?
It depends on how many wallets, chains, and protocols you have used. We agree a fixed fee after a free 30-minute review, so you know the full cost before we start.
Is providing liquidity taxable in the UK?
Often, yes. Depositing tokens for LP tokens usually counts as a disposal, and withdrawing counts as another. You may owe capital gains tax on both.
Do I pay tax on DeFi staking rewards in the UK?
Usually, yes. HMRC treats most staking rewards as income at their sterling value on the day you receive them. That value then becomes your cost basis when you sell.
