What you receive
What A Crypto Tax Report Actually Contains?
A CSV export from your exchange is not a tax report. It's raw data, and it's usually incomplete. A proper crypto tax report UK filings can rely on sets out four things.
-
Every Disposal, Matched Under HMRC's Rules
Same-day first, then the 30-day bed-and-breakfasting rule, then the Section 104 pool. Crypto-to-crypto swaps, spending and gifts to anyone other than your spouse all count as disposals, not just the sales that reached your bank.
-
Income Separated From Capital
Staking rewards, lending interest, mining, liquidity incentives, and most airdrops are income at the sterling value on the day you received them. That value then becomes the cost basis for the later disposal, so getting it wrong costs you twice.
-
The Reconciliation Trail
Which wallets and accounts were included, how transfers between your own wallets were identified and excluded, and how any gaps in the data were resolved. This is what you hand HMRC if they ask how you arrived at the figure.
-
Your Self Assessment Figures, Ready To File
The exact numbers for SA100 and SA108, with the CGT computation attached.
Do you need one
Who Needs a Crypto Tax Report UK?
You need a crypto tax report UK rules recognise if, in the tax year, you:
- Sold crypto for GBP or any other currency
- Swapped one token for another, including stablecoins
- Spent crypto on goods or services
- Received staking, lending, mining or airdrop rewards
- Gifted crypto to anyone other than your spouse or civil partner
- £3,000annual exempt amount
- £50,000total disposal proceeds
Two thresholds matter. You must report if your gains exceed the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for the current year), or if your total disposal proceeds exceed £50,000, even where the gain itself is below the allowance. That second one catches a lot of active traders who assume a small profit means nothing to declare.
Made a loss? Report it anyway. Losses have to be claimed to be used, and they carry forward indefinitely once registered.
Key dates
The 2025/26 Deadline
- 5 April 2026Tax year ended
- 31 January 2027Return and payment due
The 2025/26 tax year ended on 5 April 2026. Your return and any tax due are with HMRC by 31 January 2027.
That sounds distant in September. It isn't, if your history spans several years and a dead exchange. Reconstruction work takes time, and January is when every accountant in the country is full. Most people searching for a crypto tax report UK service in mid-January are already too late for a considered job. Clients who come to us in autumn get one. Clients who come in January get a rushed report, or a payment on account and an amendment later.
Common errors
Where Most Crypto Tax Reports Go Wrong
-
Self-Transfers Counted As Sales
Moving coins from an exchange to your own wallet isn't a disposal, but portfolio software logs it as one constantly. This inflates your gain, sometimes by tens of thousands.
-
A Token With No Purchase Record
It arrives in your wallet, the software finds no cost, assumes zero, and taxes the entire proceeds. Almost always fixable with proper reconstruction.
-
DeFi Treated As Invisible
Wrapping, liquidity provision, collateral deposits and yield all have specific treatments, and HMRC's position on whether beneficial ownership passes is what decides the outcome. Automated tools guess.
-
Income And Capital Blurred Together
Staking rewards are taxed once as income and again on disposal, or not at all. Both errors are common, and both are visible to HMRC.
We fix all four as standard. That's the difference between software output and a crypto tax report UK investors can actually defend.
How it works
How We Prepare Your Crypto Tax Report
Step
1. You Send Us Access
API keys or CSV exports from each exchange, plus your public wallet addresses. We'll tell you exactly what's needed for each platform, including the ones that have closed.
Step
2. We Reconcile Your History
Every transaction classified, transfers matched, missing data traced on-chain. Anything genuinely ambiguous comes back to you as a short list of questions rather than a guess.
Step
3. You Get The Report And The Return
Full computation, a plain-English summary of your position, and the Self Assessment filed if you'd like us to handle it. We keep the records, so next year's crypto tax report starts from a clean pool rather than from scratch.
Already contacted
Already Heard From HMRC?
A report prepared after HMRC makes contact is a different piece of work, and the order of events matters. If a crypto nudge letter from HMRC has landed, that's where to start. If HMRC has gone further and opened a formal crypto enquiry, the approach changes again. We handle both, but the strategy differs, and you want the right one before any figures reach HMRC.
Next step
Get Your Crypto Tax Report Started!
We prepare crypto tax reports for UK investors, traders and businesses every week, from single-exchange portfolios to multi-chain DeFi histories running back to 2017. Fixed fee, agreed upfront, with the computation you'd want behind you if HMRC ever asks.
Questions
People Also Ask
Do I need to file a crypto tax report if I made a loss?
You're not obliged to, but you should. Losses only reduce your tax bill if you claim them, and the claim must reach HMRC within four years of the end of the tax year in which the loss arose. Once claimed, they carry forward indefinitely against future crypto gains.
How is DeFi taxed in the UK?
It depends on whether beneficial ownership of the tokens passes. If it does, as with many lending and liquidity pool deposits, HMRC treats it as a disposal, and CGT applies immediately, even though you haven't cashed out. Rewards are then income at the sterling value on receipt.
What should I do if HMRC sends me a nudge letter about my crypto?
Don't ignore it, and don't reply with a guess. You'll usually have 30 to 60 days. Reconcile your actual transaction history first, then reply with a figure backed by a full computation. An unprompted correction attracts a lower penalty than one HMRC has to extract from you.
